Phoenician archaeological remains

The first vestiges of establishment in El Puerto de Santa Maria are of the paleolithic inferior; the deposit of “the Aculadero” testifies therefore it. In “Sands” another deposit of the Mesolítico exists and, next to the medieval tower of Do6na Blanca, a Phoenician town is excavated at the moment whose chronology is placed since the end of century IX and beginnings of century VIII adC. until the end of century II adC.

El Puerto de Santa Maria is told that as City were founded after the War of Troy by Menestheo, caudillo of Athens, remaining in her and calling it El Puerto de Menesteo. Later the Phoenicians and the Greeks impelled the commerce through their port. Proof of it is the deposit of Do6na Blanca that dates from century VIII a.C. Later it was occupied by visigodos Romans and until the century eighth.

They were later the Muslims in year 711, winners in the famous battle that would give name to our river “Guadalete” and that supposed the entrance of the Arabs in the peninsula, that the city from that moment “Alcanatif” or Puerto de las Marismas calls to.

Alfonso X

In 1260, Alfonso X conquers the city to the Muslims and he changes the Arab name to him of Alcanatif by the one Santa Maria del Puerto. This fact is the argument of the text of the Cantiga of Santa Maria nº 328, that comprises of the Song book of Santa Maria del Puerto. This monarch organized the repartimiento of earth and granted the Letter-Puebla, happening to comprise since then of Corona of Castile.

Later, as of year 1368 and until century XVIII, El Puerto happens to comprise of the ducal house of Medinaceli and will know, during this period, its majors days of glory.

Cristóbal Colón, between 1483 and 1486 (although some investigators they aim at period 1490-91), was guest of the gentlemen of El Puerto and received contribution to undertake the trip that would take to the discovery of the New World. "Proclaimed king Felipe V, the city requests its incorporation to Corona, which happens the 31 of May of 1729, in that the Court moves to spend the summer here that year and the following one. A century of the lights with an important mercantile activity and a great number of informed seated tycoons in the city, would take passage in the first years from century XIX to a city turned into headquarters of the French army during the War of Independence, under the reign of Jose Bonaparte (1810-1812). During the reign of Fernando VII (1814-1833), in the period of the liberal triennium (1820-1823), El Puerto again is occupied and taken like headquarters by troops from Santa Alianza, French army known by the One hundred Thousand Children of San Luis, to the control of the Duke of Angouleme, with the purpose of to end the liberal resistance sheltered in Cadiz and to free king Fernando VII. Released the king, this one disembarks in El Puerto and demiss the Constitution of 1812, imposing this way the absolute power of the crown.


Since that moment, the ups and downs of history, the successive religious and civil confiscations, the sociopolitical changes of every moment, as well as the development of the industry owner of a wine cellar, bring about the expansion of the local economy and the urban space, marking to the life and the people of this city.

After a strong period of recession with the lost one of the last overseas colonies of the Spanish empire, in century XX it was decided on new routes for the economic expansion and for it the commerce of the wine with prestigious warehouses installed in the city was operated, in addition the infrastructures improved to harness the tourism that have been their main source of income to the present time.

At present the city undergoes a strong expansion urban, derived from its constant increase of population in the last years, their important tourist industry, and a great economic and enterprise development thanks to its strategic geographic situation and ample industrial ground disposition.
